Since President Xi Jinping came to power in 2013, there has been an apparent shift in political slogans from Mao Zedong's "peaceful coexistence" and Hu Jintao's "harmonious world" to Xi's "Chinese Dream", marking a more active and assertive turn in shaping global perceptions of China. China's public diplomacy has become more visible, moving from listening to advocacy. A multi-level (central, local, grassroots), multi-channel (government, business, diaspora, etc.), cross-disciplinary approach emphasising Party leadership and self-reliance is gradually being developed.
