Over the past decades, India has established a steadily growing presence abroad, primarily through interdisciplinary cultural centres and the establishment of chairs in Indian studies or Indian languages at universities. The independent Indian Council for Cultural Relations is the main body responsible for overseas cultural policy. Through this body, the Indian government awards more than 3,000 scholarships for international students to study in India. However, the country is struggling to make a name for itself as an international study destination and to compete with the best universities.
