Nigeria

Country Report

Nigeria is home to at least 200 ethnic groups speaking 500 indigenous languages. The country therefore has great ethnic and cultural diversity and rich cultural resources. The lack of an up-to-date federal cultural policy makes nation branding difficult and the country's external cultural relations a challenge. Creative industries such as Nollywood and Afrobeats are among the most important instruments of Nigeria's soft power. With an annual output of almost 2,500 films, Nollywood is the second largest film industry in the world after India's Bollywood. It even surpasses Hollywood in terms of films produced annually. Despite the difficult domestic political situation, Nigeria has a thriving media sector and a fast-growing information and telecommunications industry. These are driving new developments in diaspora and digital diplomacy.
