Sport, foreign policy and cultural diplomacy are often closely linked. Sport has been used as a social glue, a factor in nation-building and as a means of soft power – especially in the Cold War period. Less well known is the use of global sport in espionage and intelligence gathering. What are the challenges and opportunities of global sport for nation states? What characterises global sport today? What responsibilities do nation states have when bidding for mega-events? What is the impact of global sport within and between societies?
