2019 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of the explorer Alexander von Humboldt. He continues to play an important role in cultural and scientific relations between Germany and Latin America. How is Humboldt perceived in Latin America today? How can we better understand the historical and political context of his voyages of discovery? What are the reasons for the regional modes of reception? And how does this context make some of the criticism of Humboldt and the sensitivities arising from this historical context understandable?
